The Secret Behind Your Beautiful Silk: What is Bobbin Winding?

Whenever we see a beautiful, shiny pure silk saree or dupatta, we admire its smoothness. But have you ever thought about how it is made? It doesn't just start on the weaving loom. The hard work begins much earlier!

In this photo from our workshop, you can see the process of bobbin winding using 100% pure silk yarn.

What is Bobbin Winding?

When raw silk arrives, it looks like a big, loose bunch of thread (called a laddi). You cannot weave fabric directly from that, or it will get tangled.

To fix this, the loose silk threads are carefully transferred onto small, tight rollers or spools. These spools are called bobbins.

Here is why this work is so important:

  • No Tangles, No Knots: Silk thread is very thin and delicate. Winding it onto bobbins ensures it doesn't get tangled or break when making the saree.

  • Perfect Quality: The thread needs to be rolled with just the right pressure. If it is done correctly, the final silk fabric comes out completely smooth and flawless.

  • Real Handmade Effort: It requires a lot of patience and a sharp eye to watch every single thread and make sure the machine is running perfectly.

When you buy our pure silk products, you are not just buying a piece of cloth. You are supporting the love, time, and hard work of local artisans who prepare every single thread by hand.
